About the Movies!

28 Days Later

Released in 2002, this (very British) post-apocalyptic horror movie is directed by Danny Boyle and written and produced by Alex Garland. The movie focuses on a group a survivors, mostly starring main character Jim, along with Selena, Frank, and Hannah.

The movie opens on a group of animal rights activits breaking into a laboratory, looking to free a BUNCH of REALLY FUCKING ANGRY CHIMPS. like they are going insane. While these activits are breaking open the cages and releasing the animals, a scientist begs them to stop! stop! he says, for they are filled with rage! (i.e. the rage virus, i.e. the virus that starts this apocalypes, meaning these infected are INFECTED and technically not "zombies" seeing as they do not die and come back to life! these people are fully alive and functioning, just clouded with RAGE. this is very important)

Next, Jim (played by the beautiful & bald Cillian Murphy), wakes up BUTT ASS NAKED in a hospital bed 28 days after the releasing of the rage infected chimps. which must have been a shock for him! He dresses in some scrubs, leaves the hospital (cue the iconic empty opening scenes), and runs into Selena (played by the amazing Naomie Harris!) and this other guy named Mark! Sooner or Later, Jim and Selena run into father-daughter duo Frank and Hannah! These funky four then team up and set their sights on a military blockade that had sent out broadcast inviting any survivors to come for protection and salvation.

I honestly do not think I can truly give justice to the beauty and horror that is 28 Days Later. It is my favorite movie in the 28 blank later series. The entire message behind these movies are the power and horror of human, social, and military rage, war and violence and social collapse. At the end of the movie, and beginning of the sequel, its revealed that only the british isles have fallen from this rage virius, and everyone in the world just lets them. every other country just leaves them there! it very much explores the mentality of kill or BE killed and how human empathy and compassion fight against the primal urge to survive and look out for oneself. Over even the conflict of running and fighting and killing the infected, the movies biggest villian comes in the form of Major Henry West, "I promised them women". To me, 28 Days Later explores the darkest aspect of what an actual socitial collapse would entail, and through it all, and through the absolute madman that is Jim, family and compassion and helping others prevails!
Now please, ignore my horrible writing and summary, and watch the actual masterpiece!

28 Weeks Later

First like five minutes are great but after that get this stupid ass movie out of my face jesus christ and jeremy renner is there. LOATHE. it is not canon to me. you can actually skip right over it. ugh.

28 Years Later

The ACTUAL sequel to 28 Days Later, this 2025 release picks up the plot 28 years later, on a small island community of people, whose only connection to the mainland is a path avaliable only during low tide. The main character of this film is little 12 year old Spike, whose mother is very ill and whose dad is Aaron Taylor Johnson and also has a lot of masculinity and anger issues. The focus of this opening shows us how the british have evolved to living without power, water, food, or promised safety. There is a huge emphasis on how they fight and hunt with bows and arrows, they filter their own water, and grow their own food.

The main plot of 28 Years Later follows Spike taking his sick mother with him to find Dr Ian Kelson, who is shunned by the community of survivors for his strange behaviors. Through his journey, Spike learns to reject his father aggressive hyper masculinity, and learn true strentgh through his mother and through having kindness for others through Ian Kelson, who has created a type of graveyard for those passed. Dr Ian Kelson discovers spikes mother, Isla, has cancer, incurable in this socitial collapse. The end of the movie focuses on Spike returning to travelling the infected mainland in search of himself and what more he can learn.

I saw 28 Years Later in theaters!! and it was PHENONMENAL!!! i really really loved this continuation of the universe and i think the plot was very compelling. From an anthropological perspective, i love how the evolution and adaption of both the infected and the survivors was shown. It introduced the infected living in a more pack/communial situation, now having "alphas". I also really like the choice of making all the infected who have been infected for decades, butt naked! it makes a lot a sense to me. i love little spike so much. and the movie also introduces the charismatic villian, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal! Son of Ol' Nick!

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Released in early January 2026, this continuation of 28 Years Later delves into the basically opposite lives of Dr Ian Kelson and Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal and his Fingers! (and Spike, his newest finger). While Jimmy Crystal is shown slaughtering innocent survivors and wrecking havoc among his cults mental status, Dr Ian Kelson is pictured showing the utmost care and empathy for the most intimadating and aggressive infected alpha in the area, Samson. This movie really expands on what the first movie set up, that these infected are real, alive, bleeding and breathing people. The virus shrouds the infecteds mind with rage induced psychosis, they are still conscious underneath the haze, shown by Samson's budding friendship with Dr Ian Kelson.

I really really really really LOVE THIS MOVIE. I thought it was a beautiful continuation of what this series stands for. It is gory and brutal and insane and touching and wonderful and so so human. And has one of the sickest soundtracks ever? and the end scene goes CRAZY.I don't want to give too much away because it did JUST come out (at the time that I am writing this) but, you gotta go see it man. its fucking wonderful. i wish i could see it in theaters again, just this time without a pubsub bc oh i didnt want to eat after what happens in this crazy ass movie.

Overall, this movie has been a fan favorite, but a box office failure! isnt that crazy how that works? I dont care though because i know the third movie in the "28 Years Later" series is already greenlit and going to be made. Now I just have to wait until next year... also HUGE SPOILER.... JIM COMES BACK IN THIS MOVIE. the ending scene reveals Jim living in the same cottage we saw "28 Days Later" end in, with his and Selena's DAUGHTER. CAN YOU BELEIVE THAT??? CRAZY REVEAL. esp bc at the end of "28 Days Later" it is shown that Jim, Selena, and Hannah are seen by a Finnish helicopter, with a pilot saying "Will you send a helicopter?" in finnish. so did that helicopter never get sent? did it crash while otw to save them? how long did they believe someone was coming to help them?? WHERE IS MY GIRL SELENA? ANYWAYS i believe jim and his daughter will be titular/main characters in the third movie. SO fucking excited

HOWZHAT?

Fun Facts:

While it did not invent the 'fast zombies' idea in the horror genre, 28 days later popularized it after its 2002 release! (even inspiring The Walking Dead and Shaun of the Dead!)

28 Days Later is well known for its "Guerilla Style" filming, using cheap camcorders to film scenes for its rough, grainy look.

Atheletes, dancers, and gymnasts were cast as the infected in the first movie! They were better at intense, more animalistic movements. (28 Years Later also followed this casting direction as well!)

They had no budget to shut down the busy london streets in the opening scenes. They instead woke up early in the morning and asked the normal passersby to stop until the quickly shot scenes were over!

The film was shot around the time of September 11th, 2001, making for a somber BTS.

28 Days Later inspired a LARPing game called "2.8 Hours Later"! Players would run through their city on a scavenger hunt, while dodging the infected!

Many of the scenes in 28 Years Later were filmed on iPhones!

All genitilia shown in 28 Years Later is prosthetic!

My Love For Rage

I know I have already explained my love and affection for the 28 Days/Years Later series, but I just HAVE to yap about it again.

Personally, zombie and post-apocalyptic horror is one of my favorite genre's of all time. one of my faovrite tv shows EVER is Z-Nation, I know, not the hit popular zombie tv show youd expect. I dont know why it really scratches that itch for me but it ALWAYS DOES. I think it may be an anthopology thing? The implication of society collapsing and people having to rely on their basic instincts and seeing what community and innovation and decision making comes out of that thrills me! like with the pack dynamics/alpha infected they added in 28 years later!!!! thats awesome!!!!

and while i would not classify 28 Days Later as a ZOMBIE series seeing as the infected are not DEAD, and so we should not call them, "zombies", it is 100% "post apocalyptic" and that is just as good. Even if only the British Isles are in an apocalypse. Which also makes me laugh? the entire world just LEAVES them there. and just moves on! wow! we can do that??

Anyways, my infatuation for this series runs deep. I currently own only ONE piece of 28 Days Later Merch and it is just a special edition wide screen DVD of the movie! it comes in a really cool 3D slip for the case. cant wait to rewatch! hard to find other merch for it honestly, I am hoping with the release of these movies some more is made.. i would buy it.

my copy! still with walmart tag on it LOL, only $10!
